CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: THE FILMS OF AKIRA KUROSAWA, PART II FEATURING “THE IDIOT”

This final film in the seminal Kurasawa retrospective is his 1951 adaptation of Dostoyevsky’s The Idiot. The visuals are stunning and Kurosawa’s fidelity to the characterizations and themes of his “favorite author” is almost fanatic. An ingenious scenario finds Myshkin personified as Kameda, an ex-soldier who narrowly escapes death, whose vow to practice total selflessness in his relationships still cannot stave off tragedy.

GRAND OPENING OF DOMINICAN, CUBAN, PUERTO RICAN & OTHER CARIBBEAN FOOD SHOP AT EL RINCONCITO Y LA COCINA DEL CAMAGUEY

Mi amiga (my friend) Ilonka Garcia recently started offering authentic Caribbean Latino food for pick-up, take out & catering at one of LA’s oldest Cuban markets, El Camaguey. Her food is scrumptious and made healthily. The prices are amazing too – every day she has $5 meal specials and all dishes are under $10. The flavors will make you think you’re back on the east coast or even in the Caribbean. There are options for every customer’s palate: fried when you want to be bad (lol), vegetarian bowls, island plates, prime ribs, pupusas, tacos and tortas, steaks, sandwiches and plate combinations. Ilonka’s new culinary partner is a gentleman named Hector who owned the first Dominican restaurant ever opened in California called Caribe Sol Restaurant in Glendale. Her food is GREAT! DOMINICAN, CUBAN, PUERTO RICAN & OTHER CARIBBEAN FOOD AT EL RINCONCITO Y LA COCINA DEL CAMAGUEY

“COUNTDOWN TO ZERO” SCREENING

Ever since Manhattan Project director J. Robert Oppenheimer captured the horror of the mushroom cloud as “the destroyer of worlds,” nuclear weapons have stoked fear, awe, and greed everywhere. The U.S. and the Soviet Union assembled massive nuclear arsenals poised to launch at the push of a button. Countries around the world clamored for uranium and the technology to transform it into deadly weaponry. But since the Cold War ended, the delicate balance the two superpowers preserved — and the disarmament process they began — has largely collapsed, leaving the world with nine nuclear powers and arsenals vulnerable to terrorism, failed diplomacy, or simple accident. Featuring dozens of interviews, including with statesmen like Mikhail Gorbachev and Pervez Musharraf, director Lucy Walker and producer Lawrence Bender’s “Countdown to Zero” traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to today’s disarmament efforts. Zócalo and KCRW present the Los Angeles premiere of “Countdown to Zero”, a powerful documentary that makes the case for eliminating nuclear weapons around the world.

DOMINICAN, CUBAN, PUERTO RICAN & OTHER CARIBBEAN FOOD AT EL RINCONCITO Y LA COCINA DEL CAMAGUEY
