LACMA CONCERT SERIES: THROUGH THE MIC

Through the Mic is LACMA’s new concert series that explores contemporary local Hip Hop, focusing on the diversity of L.A.-based artists. Co-curated by LACMA and hip-hop artist Murs, concerts will take place in front of artist Chris Burden’s iconic Urban Light sculpture on the third Thursday of every month, from May through October. Tonight’s performers are 3MG: Murs, Eligh, and Scarub
which reunites for their first performance together in more than five years. 3MG’s Murs, Eligh, and Scarub met as students at Los Angeles’s Hamilton High and released Gypsy’s Luck before joining forces with The Mystik Journeymen and The Grouch to form The Living Legends. 3MG went back to the studio in 2005 to record Grand Caravan to the End of the World and have since been on hiatus to work on solo projects. The local trio returns to the stage less than four miles from where it all began.

THE NIGHT SKY SHOW

Shows and lectures are very popular and sell out quickly; advance ticket purchase strongly recommended. Tickets may be purchased at the door on the evening of the show, or in person at the SMC Theatre Arts Box Office (Theatre Arts Complex, SMC Main Campus). Shows (except selected guest lectures) are held in the John Drescher Planetarium, located on SMC’s Main Campus in Drescher Hall Room 223. BUG FAIR AT THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Nearly 70 exhibitors fill museum halls! This year is the Year of the Fly. Zzzzzzzzzzzz! Visitors can cradle a bug or two in their palms and learn about the homes and habits of a wide variety of roaming insects from Entomology Curator Dr. Brian Brown (one of the Museum’s fly experts). Government agencies, educational institutions, and entomological societies will be on hand to answer bug-related questions. The fair will also be abuzz with exhibitors, displaying everything from live specimens to bug-related products, such as honey, silk, and wax as well as bug-inspired artwork.

“THEN” BY LISA LEONE HIP-HOP PHOTO EXHIBIT
This new photo exhibition documents hip-hop’s moments of truth. Before hip-hop was an industry, it was a community. THEN, a new solo show from photographer Lisa Leone, is a deeply personal portrayal of the last days of hip-hop’s innocence, of a culture caught between an intimate past and a global future.

Born in the Bronx and raised throughout New York City, Lisa Leone has been surrounded by hip-hop culture for virtually her entire life. By the late eighties, as a widely published photographer, she was in a unique position to capture a behind the-scenes perspective on the spirit of collaboration that fueled hip-hop’s early artistic triumphs. “To see a young Nas in the studio with Q-Tip, Premier and Large Professor was not only inspiring,” she reflects on one of the candid photos included in the show, “it is ‘the decisive moment’.”

THEN explores a series of such moments through the eyes of the young artists that would go on to become the hip-hop generation’s biggest stars: Snoop Dogg, Lauryn Hill, Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Run DMC, Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Rosie Perez, the Roots, Queen Latifah and many others.

But these are not mere portraits. Each image captures a unique interaction between an individual and their environment, and is supported with text drawn from new interviews with the subjects themselves. “It was still fresh and we, the generation of that movement, still dictated what it was and meant to us and not the mass media. HERB RITTS: L.A. STYLE

Herb Ritts was a late, L.A.-born photographer well known for shooting celebrities and Greek inspired shots. Photos displayed are of Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Mel Gibson, athletes Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Greg Louganis, early ’90s supermodels and dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones. THE NIGHT SKY SHOW

Stefano Bloch will discuss the birth, life, and slow death of L.A.’s iconic Olympic Festival freeway murals. His talk is based on in-depth ethnographic research conducted on the graffiti community and historical research conducted on L.A.’s Chicano and mainstream muralist traditions. Bloch argues that two decades of bad policy, belligerent graffiti abatement, and combative freeway bombers conspired to turn aesthetically inviting freeway walls into alienating beige eyesores. He will also be showing images from the Los Angeles Public Library Photo Collection and sharing excerpts from his personal archive of interviews, images, and reflections that focus on the appearance of L.A.’s public walls.

SHOEBOXLA PRESENTS TIMOTHY NOLAN: DRIFT

For nearly two decades Nolan has explored illusions of three-dimensional space through the use of pattern, line and shape in two dimensional wall work and floor installations. While Minimalism and Cubism have influenced Nolan’s work, he also draws inspiration from lesser-known movements such as Pattern and Decoration and Op Art, addressing shifting perception of two and three dimensions; plastic space vs. real dimensionality. For his ShoeboxLA project, he will further this investigation in a work that falls somewhere between object, installation and drawing.
Timothy Nolan was awarded CCI and Durfee Foundation ARC Grants in 2012 and 2010, the COLA Fellowship Grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs in 2008, and a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation in 2001. A concurrent show entitled Restack, at CB1 Gallery in Los Angeles, will run from April 1-29th.
ShoeboxLA gives Los Angeles artists an opportunity to do one-day, site-specific exhibitions outside the traditional gallery setting. The Studio for Southern California History seeks to critically chronicle Southern California history from a social and cultural perspective.

SPRINGFEST 2012 in LA CHINATOWN: MUSIC, ARTS AND FOOD 

Head to LA’s Chinatown for Springfest, an outdoor street festival that brings together all that is eclectic and unique about Los Angeles–from its authentic foodie culture, to its plethora of local music, artists, craft beers and much more. Over the past two years, the participants in The Los Angeles Photography Project have produced images that fit into one central theme: the diversity that lies in L.A.‘s people, architecture, and it’s natural and cultural environments. A great many of these images have captured the look of the city as represented by its unique buildings, special places, and other physical properties. They are some of our favorite places and many have been designated as “Icons”.

TRAVELS THROUGH BLACKNESS: THE RON FINLEY COLLECTION OF INTERNATIONAL MOVIE POSTERS, 1920s to 1970s OPENING RECEPTION

This is a unique exhibition that highlights posters spanning from well-known classic movies to more obscure African American films from the mid-20th century. The collection examines the evolution of the African American movie role, from white actors in black face, to servile roles as maids and porters, to a more well-rounded representation of African American society. This exhibit contains stunning examples of vintage poster design and typography, printed in offset and stone lithography, and includes posters from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Pieces from this collection have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Hollywood Entertainment, and Booth Western Art Museum. The exhibition will have strong educational elements for students, teachers, and the general public. The show aims to appeal to artists, designers, photographers, typographers, actors, historians, film students, film enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

82^ND ANNUAL BLESSINGS OF THE ANIMALS ON OLVERA STREET

The event is from 12-5pm with a procession on Olvera Street commencing at 2pm and a blessing to immediately follow. There will be music, animal non-profits, pony rides for children and a petting zoo complete with llamas, sheep, cows and other animals. Many animals have been blessed – from cats and dogs to more exotic pets such as snakes and iguanas. A cow covered with a blanket of flowers will lead the elaborate afternoon procession down Olvera Street because it is the animal that provides the most to humanity. After the procession, the Most Reverend Archbishop of Los Angeles José H. Gomez will individually bless all pets; however, you don’t need a pet to enjoy this beautiful annual event.

Herb Ritts was a late, L.A.-born photographer well-known for shooting celebrities and Greek inspired shots. Photos displayed are of Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Mel Gibson, athletes Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Greg Louganis, early ’90s supermodels and dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones. The exhibit also highlights Ritts’ commercials and music videos, which began with Madonna’s 1989 “Cherish” — the first time he’d used a moving camera — and went on to include Jackson’s “In the Closet,” Janet Jackson’s “Love Will Never Do (Without You)” and Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game.” Free thru 8.26.12

Explore, celebrate and volunteer to strengthen our local food system. There will be almost 40 different event sites with thousands of volunteers and participants doing good deeds around the city. Volunteer opportunities will include garden plantings and cooking demonstrations, neighborhood cooking competitions, CalFresh sign-ups at farmers’ markets, and food policy trainings and education. Several project sites will also be hosting Good Food fairs open to the general public. The closing event is a resource fair, cooking contest and panel discussion.

KAYPRI’S SOLO PLAY “BABYGIRL” @ THE FIRST ANNUAL SILVER LAKE’S FEMALE FESTIVAL VOICED

A one of a kind one woman play, Babygirl the coming of age sitcom/drama/confessions of a media-codependa-lova-holic is tailormade for the Hollywood audience. Actress and playwright Kaypri, takes you through an exciting journey of her life which you can fully appreciate whether or not you grew up in the era of 70’s and 80’s television.

Babygirl tells the story of a self professed (bi-racial) pop-culture/hopeless romantic who goes through the growing pains of childhood, the peer pressures of adolescence…and finally to the realization that though media might be our first love, sometimes we have to press the off button to find ourselves.

Kaypri will perform as part of the inaugural Silver Lake’s Female Festival VOICED. VOICED will also feature a run of The Vagina Monologues, The Eve Ensler documentary Until the Violence Stops, improv performances, a two woman play about being a mother in Los Angeles, and Frolic, a night of comediennes doing live comedy.

ALAN ROSS ON ANSEL ADAMS EXHIBIT
Alan Ross is a renowned photographer who worked side-by-side with Ansel Adams as his photographic assistant and who knows Adams’s approach and technique perhaps better than any other photographer today.  He was personally selected by Adams to be the exclusive printer of the Yosemite Special Edition Photographs in 1975, an assignment Alan continues to this day, making each print by hand from Adams’ original negatives using traditional darkroom techniques. In his autobiography, Adams stated that Ross “makes the images with sensitivity…and interprets them as closely as possible to my original fine prints.”  Ross’s talk will survey Adams’s landscapes, as well as lesser known subjects, including his portraiture, commercial work and socially conscious documentary photography.

20^TH ANNUAL ART OF MOTION PICTURE COSTUME DESIGN EXHIBIT

The FIDM Museum is proud to present the twentieth anniversary Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition. Celebrating the art and industry of costume designers, this exhibition will present more than 100 costumes from twenty films released in 2011.

The exhibition includes selected costumes from all five 2011 Academy Award® Nominees for Costume Design: W/E, Hugo, Jane Eyre, The Artist, and Anonymous. Highlighted in the exhibition is the previous year’s Academy Award® winner for Costume Design, Alice in Wonderland. A gown from Alice in Wonderland will greet visitors as they enter the galleries.

The exhibition also showcases classic film costumes from the FIDM Museum collection and the Department of Recreation and Parks, City of Los Angeles, Historic Hollywood Collection. Some of these same costumes were featured during the first Art of Motion Picture Costume Design exhibition in 1993.

L.A. Taco, a favorite cheap arts and street eats blog, launches its annual Taco Madness tournament to reveal which Los Angeles taqueria thumps loudest in the hearts of Angeleños this year. Voting in the first round is open now, and includes several intriguing matchups including Echo Park hipster favorites Tacos Ariza and Taco Zone going head-to-head.  Mexicali Tacos will try to be the contest’s first back-to-back winner but faces stiff competition from last year’s runner up Mariscos Jalisco, Ricky’s Fish Taco, and Tacos Leo, among others.

TRAVELS THROUGH BLACKNESS: THE RON FINLEY COLLECTION OF INTERNATIONAL MOVIE POSTERS, 1920s to 1970s OPENING RECEPTION

This is a unique exhibition that highlights posters spanning from well-known classic movies to more obscure African American films from the mid-20th century. The collection examines the evolution of the African American movie role, from white actors in black face, to servile roles as maids and porters, to a more well-rounded representation of African American society. This exhibit contains stunning examples of vintage poster design and typography, printed in offset and stone lithography, and includes posters from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Pieces from this collection have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Hollywood Entertainment, and Booth Western Art Museum. The exhibition will have strong educational elements for students, teachers, and the general public. The show aims to appeal to artists, designers, photographers, typographers, actors, historians, film students, film enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

Catch two of my favorite 80s flicks at this double screening series. It’s the 25th Anniversary of “Moonstruck” starring Nicholas Cage, Cher, Danny Aiello and Olympia Dukakis, and directed by Norman Jewison. “Bring me the big knife!” Wonderfully lunatic comic gem from screenwriter John Patrick Shanley, starring Cher as Loretta Castorini, a sexy, smart-mouthed widow who’s resigned herself to an upcoming marriage to terminally indecisive Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello) – until Johnny’s wildly passionate, one-handed brother Ronny (Nicolas Cage) professes his undying love for her. Academy Award winner for Best Actress (Cher), Supporting Actress (Olympia Dukakis) and Screenplay (Shanley).

See the 35mm archival print of 1980’s “9 TO 5” – a classic from director Colin Higgins (writer of “Harold and Maude” and director of “Silver Streak”) brilliantly brings together three of Hollywood’s favorite female stars – Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton – in an uproarious office farce. At Consolidated, the office manager (Tomlin), the vice president’s secretary (Parton) and the newest employee (Fonda) plot revenge against their sexist, egotistical and hypocritical boss Franklin Hart Jr. (Dabney Coleman). The scheme spins wildly out of control, forcing them to keep Hart tied up as they take over the company and run it their own way. Full of witty one-liners, great ’80s outfits and an unforgettable soundtrack (including Parton’s Oscar-nominated title song), this delightful, insightful comedy is so much fun “it’ll drive you crazy if you let it.”

“SUNSET BOULEVARD” & “MULHOLLAND DR.” DOUBLE FEATURE

Director Billy Wilder’s 1950 classic “Sunset Boulevard” created one of his most enduring masterpieces in this dark, glittering poison pen letter to all things Hollywood, told in flashback by murdered screenwriter Joe Gillis (William Holden), whose final job is playing paid-companion to egocentric, aging silent film goddess Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). With Erich von Stroheim. Academy Award Winner for Best Screenplay (Wilder, Charles Brackett and D.M. Marshman, Jr.) and Score (Franz Waxman). The original Schwab’s drugstore figures prominently in the film, as does Paramount Studios and the still-standing Alto Nido apartments.

In David Lynch’s maniacal, notorious noir thriller, “Mulholland Dr.” amnesiac Rita (Laura Harring), who barely escapes being murdered on winding, hilly  Mulholland Drive, makes her way down to Hollywood, where she sneaks into the apartment of bright-eyed aspiring actress Betty (Naomi Watts). When the two women encounter each other and try to piece together what happened to Rita, their descent into the freshly warped and hypnotically nightmarish Lynchian rabbit hole ensues.

TRAVELS THROUGH BLACKNESS: THE RON FINLEY COLLECTION OF INTERNATIONAL MOVIE POSTERS, 1920s to 1970s OPENING RECEPTION

This is a unique exhibition that highlights posters spanning from well-known classic movies to more obscure African American films from the mid-20th century. The collection examines the evolution of the African American movie role, from white actors in black face, to servile roles as maids and porters, to a more well-rounded representation of African American society. This exhibit contains stunning examples of vintage poster design and typography, printed in offset and stone lithography, and includes posters from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Pieces from this collection have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Hollywood Entertainment, and Booth Western Art Museum. The exhibition will have strong educational elements for students, teachers, and the general public. The show aims to appeal to artists, designers, photographers, typographers, actors, historians, film students, film enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

As part of this weekend’s tribute to esteemed thespian Malcolm McDowell, you can catch the beautiful new digital restorations of these classic flicks. There will be a discussion between the films with actor Malcolm McDowell. He’s also receiving his star on Hollywood Walk of Fame at 11am. Congrats!
1971’s “A Clockwork Orange” was helmed by Stanley Kubrick and it feature’s Malcolm McDowell’s debut. Kubrick supposedly refused to do the film without McDowell’s participation!

1979’s “Time After Time” is one of McDowell’s most popular and engaging films. He portrayed Victorian author H.G. Wells, in pursuit of Jack the Ripper (David  Warner), time-traveling to contemporary San Francisco and finding help and romance from shy modern girl Mary Steenburgen. A marvelously entertaining blend of sci-fi, literary history and modern pop culture from Nicholas Meyer, the director of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan”.

NATIVE VOICES PRESENTS WALKING ON TURTLE ISLAND & GHOSTLANDS OF AN URBAN NDN PLAYS

These two Native American oriented plays are written and performed by Robert Owens-Greygrass (Lakota). In “Walking on Turtle Island” Owens-Greygrass embodies twenty-two characters—from a grandfather, to a mixed-blood sun dancer, to a boy who has lost his dog, to an eighty-year-old Ojibway woman, to Iyeska, a trickster and spirit guide who moves through centuries and inhabits various spiritual “skins.” Greygrass portrays the often untold Indigenous experience through these powerful and unique stories of Turtle Island (North America). In “Ghostlands of an Urban NDN” we follow Robert, a multiethnic-non specific-lower-middle-class-urban-NDN white guy, as he navigates the conflicting worlds of a mixed-race heritage. Acclaimed storyteller Robert Owens-Greygrass portrays sixteen characters in this gritty look at the sometimes humorous, always gripping urban Native journey through the ghostlands.

TRAVELS THROUGH BLACKNESS: THE RON FINLEY COLLECTION OF INTERNATIONAL MOVIE POSTERS, 1920s to 1970s OPENING RECEPTION

This is a unique exhibition that highlights posters spanning from well-known classic movies to more obscure African American films from the mid-20th century. The collection examines the evolution of the African American movie role, from white actors in black face, to servile roles as maids and porters, to a more well-rounded representation of African American society. This exhibit contains stunning examples of vintage poster design and typography, printed in offset and stone lithography, and includes posters from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Pieces from this collection have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Hollywood Entertainment, and Booth Western Art Museum. The exhibition will have strong educational elements for students, teachers, and the general public. The show aims to appeal to artists, designers, photographers, typographers, actors, historians, film students, film enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

DOUBLE FEATURE: “RAGING BULL” & “REQUIEM FOR A HEAVYWEIGHT” 

“Raging Bull” is a 1980 classic featuring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty and Joe Pesci. It’s a stunning black-and-white portrait of prizefighter Jake La Motta (Robert De Niro) and his harrowing, destructive bouts in and out of the ring, beautifully shot by cinematographer Michael Chapman. Winner of Academy Awards for Best Actor (De Niro) and Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker).
Keeping with the boxing theme is the 50^th anniversary 35mm print screening of “Requiem for a Heavyweight” starring Anthony Quinn as a fighter whose best days are behind him, and Mickey Rooney as his sympathetic trainer, in this classic piece of humanist filmmaking. Rod Serling’s script powerfully depicts Quinn’s downfall as he descends into corruption at the behest of unscrupulous manager Jackie Gleason.

JUNG JI “MASA” LEE “KONDOMOZO’S UNIVERSE” ARTIST RECEPTION

Artist Jung ji “Masa” Lee invented the character Kondomozo primarily as a response to the racism he faced as a mixed person. He wanted to create a creature who is culturally flexible and who personifies self-acceptance. The universe that Kondomozo inhabits is constructed from conscious and subconscious drawings, doodles, text and maps. “Masa” finds inspirations in the work of several artists and the aesthetics of many cultural movements. These influences include: Jean-Michel Basquiat; On Kawara; Yoshitomo Nara; Inka Essenhigh; Mark Manders; Laura Owens; Suh Do-ho; Cy Twombly; Julie Mehrets; Andy Warhol; Jackson Pollock; Gustav Klimt; Noh Theater; Japanese YOUKAI story with Natsuhiko Kyougoku works; KOTODAMA; Super Flat-Takashi Murakami; Otaku culture and Mandala paintings.
“Masa” won 2010 Showcase Juried (1st, Abstract) and Showcase (4th, Abstract) ArtSlant awards, and in 2011 won 2nd, 4th, and 6th place ArtSlant awards in the drawing, mixed media, and painting categories. Join Masa and friends for an evening of music, food, wine, and great art.

An elegant hymn to memory and the transporting power of the movies, Terence Davies’ tale of young Bud, a lonely, isolated preteen in postwar Liverpool, was listed by Time Out London as one of the best British films ever made, and is a moving biographical work. Though doted upon by his mother and sisters, Bud is miserable at his new school, where menacing bullies make his life hell, and he retreats to the local movie house, letting the silvery images of the cinema bring him some solace.
