CUT&PASTE DIGITAL DESIGN TOURNAMENT 2012

This is an awesome global digital design competition filled with lively onstage battles and reputation-making performances. It’s a live design competition of 16 designers competing in 2D, 3D and Motion/Animation. Winners in each field will claim their place representing LA at the 2012 Cut&Paste Global Championship in NYC! This year’s tour extends beyond the stage with the “Design for Clean Water Challenge,” an Audience Design Contest, courtesy of Adobe. Powered by Adobe’s Ideas iPad App, audience members will be challenged to sketch a clever concept to help charity:water bring water to those in need. Selected from the global pool of audience participants from Cut&Paste’s 2011-12 Tour, the winner will receive the opportunity to collaborate with charity:water on one of their next campaigns. HP hosts the HP Experience Area, an interactive booth incorporating HP Mobile Workstation products and HP displays, in which designers can manipulate a photo and share with HP on Twitter, or Cut&Paste’s Facebook, for a chance to win a high res display screen. Adobe will also present a special Show&Tell on hot new techniques for making your designs flow using Adobe CS5. This sounds like a great event.

Join the Director’s Guild of America at this special tribute to Director-Producer-Filmmaker-Activist Paris Barclay, along with notable directors, writers, actors and performers who have worked with Paris or have been influenced by his work: Kevin Bray, Michael Chiklis, LL Cool J, Holly Dale, Taylor Hackford, Walter Hill, Sharon Lawrence, Kevin McHale, CCH Pounder, Katey Sagal, Michael Schultz, Millicent Shelton, Sinbad, Chris Spencer, Kurt Sutter and Glynn Turman.

Paris Barclay has directed over 120 episodes of television, winning two Emmy Awards and a DGA Award for NYPD Blue. He has garnered four other Emmy nominations along with nine DGA Award nominations for episodes of Glee, In Treatment, Weeds, House, The West Wing, and ER. He also won an NAACP Image Award for Best Drama Series as co-creator, writer and director of City of Angels, and another Image Award for directing Cold Case. One of the Guild’s busiest single-camera directors, Paris currently serves as Executive Producer and primary director of FX’s highest rated series ever, Sons of Anarchy.

A former co-chair of the African American Steering Committee, Paris is currently the DGA’s First Vice President, chairs the DGA’s Political Action Committee and co-chairs its Diversity Committee. Should be a good night.

TRAVELS THROUGH BLACKNESS: THE RON FINLEY COLLECTION OF INTERNATIONAL MOVIE POSTERS, 1920s to 1970s OPENING RECEPTION

This is a unique exhibition that highlights posters spanning from well-known classic movies to more obscure African American films from the mid-20th century. The collection examines the evolution of the African American movie role, from white actors in black face, to servile roles as maids and porters, to a more well-rounded representation of African American society. This exhibit contains stunning examples of vintage poster design and typography, printed in offset and stone lithography, and includes posters from the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America.

Pieces from this collection have been featured in exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California African American Museum, Hollywood Entertainment, and Booth Western Art Museum. The exhibition will have strong educational elements for students, teachers, and the general public. The show aims to appeal to artists, designers, photographers, typographers, actors, historians, film students, film enthusiasts, and anyone with an appreciation for the arts.

THE HISTORY OF CUBAN PHOTOGRAPHY: A PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

This lecture is on the history of Cuban Photography by MOLAA’s President and C.E.O. Stuart A. Ashman. The history of Cuban photography began in 1840, a few years after the invention of photography in France in 1836. In the early part of the 20th century there were portrait studios in Havana that rivaled in number, those in Paris and New York.

The conversation will include historical events in Cuba and how they affected the development of the medium on the island. Images shown include historic and archival photos, as well as the work of important Cuban photojournalists like Generoso Funcasta, Roberto Salas and Raul Corrales. Contemporary photographers represented include Juan Carlos Alom, Rene Peña and Marta María Perez Bravo.

THE ACADEMY CELEBRATES PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Presented in honor of Paramount Pictures’ Centennial Celebration, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sponsors this exhibition highlighting some of the iconic films and filmmakers from the studio’s first 100 years. Culled from collections at the Academy’s Margaret Herrick Library, the exhibition in the Academy’s Grand Lobby Gallery will explore Paramount’s early history with correspondence from Adolph Zukor, Jesse L. Lasky’s handwritten budget for The Squaw Man (1914) and materials relating to Paramount’s stars, including Mary Pickford, Gloria Swanson and Rudolph Valentino. The exhibition will also include a gallery of posters featuring Paramount’s 12 Best Picture winners, an original production design sketch by Hans Dreier for Wings (1927), story sketches for Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments (1956) and sketches for designs by Paramount’s style maven and costume designer, Edith Head. Dozens of behind-the-scenes production stills from throughout the studio’s history will offer insights into some of the screen’s most acclaimed films, including Sunset Blvd.,The Godfather, Chinatown, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Redsand There Will Be Blood.

“PIPE DREAMS” DOCUMENTARY SCREENING & Q&A WITH LESLIE IWERKS

This documentary is about the controversial Keystone XL pipeline. The fate of America’s largest fresh water aquifer is at stake in the debate over Keystone XL, and a deadline for the decision to be made by President Obama has been pushed up from 2013 to February 21, 2012. Pipe Dreams is an important tool for thousands of people across the country successfully fighting the pipeline. Across the heartland of America, farmers and landowners are fighting to protect their land, their water, and their livelihood against the controversial Keystone XL Pipeline. Routed from Hardisty, Alberta to the Texas Gulf Coast, this tar sands pipeline is set to cross the country’s largest freshwater resource, the Ogallala Aquifer, and the fragile Sandhills of Nebraska, posing devastating consequences to human health, livestock, and agriculture.

Narrated by Daryl Hannah, the film follows what many call “the greatest environmental battle in the U.S. today,” and has been screened on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., and in Nebraska for ranchers and affected landowners. The G2 Gallery will be exhibiting images of the Tar Sands–the dirty fuel source at the heart of the controversy–by award-winning photographer Garth Lenz.

Christopher Felver is known for his documentary photographs of the beats, poets and musicians. This is a collection of works by an array of both established and emerging Mexican American artists, and includes paintings, drawings, sculpture, and photography. Many pieces are on loan form the Cheech Marin Collection, one of the largest private collections of Chicano art in the United States. Since the 1960′s, Cheech Marin, an original member of the renowned comedy team of “Cheech and Chong,” has been renowned as a comedian, film actor, writer, and musician.
